Punta del Este – Day 1!

I was so excited to finally get to go to one of my dream destinations, Punta de Leste!  I was so excited that I really did not mind the 4am wake up call to catch the 530am flight!  LOL!  It was a great way to start the day when you see the sun slowly rising above the mountains and changing the grey skies into these vivid hues of deep oranges and yellows.  It was a reminder for me to try and catch the sun rise more often.

Flew into Punta de Leste as dawn was breaking.

Punta de Leste is the playground of South America.  It’s located in Uruguay and is filled with luxury apartments and beautiful homes.  I have only hear stories of this place and now I am about to experience it. Nix found us a great hotel that recently opened called the Hotel Atlantico http://www.hotelatlanticopuntadeleste.com/en/index  It was nice and simple and had a feeling of Margiela as everything was done in white.  What I liked about the hotel was that it was centrally located and although Punta de Leste may seem small on a map in reality it’s actually quite big and the taxi’s are extremely expensive!  Actually most everything in Punta de Leste is expensive so save up before coming.

Really enjoyed the sunrise.

It was a reminder for me to try and get to see more sunrises this year.

We stayed at Hotel Atlantico which just opened and this is their lobby.

The people here are super friendly and very kind.  I felt this genuine warmth that really made our stay extra special.  I immediately asked our concierge where to eat and what to do given our limited time and he drafted a great itinerary that started with a beautiful brunch at the Virazon restaurant  http://www.virazon.com.uy  I was ecstatic when I saw that they specialised in sea food. Being in a predominantly meat eating continent having sea food was like mana from heaven.  We began with a bottle of cold Albarino white one which was really fantastic.  Then we ordered some steamed mussels which is Nix’s favourite dish.  It was so simple and beautifully prepared that we both let a sigh of happiness.  LOL!  Then came a plate of perfectly golden crisp calamari followed by a fish dish with brown butter and capers.  However the real winner for me was the baby squid in a dark vinegar and onion sauce!  this dish was magical!  We had the luxury of having a beautiful long lunch while enjoying the fabulous views.

Another part of the lobby.

The breakfast area.

The back look which had a 50's vibe complete with a cabana bar.

We took a walk around our area which had great modern architectural buildings.

Vespa spotting! There is this real mid century vibe in Punta de Leste.

Gorgeous water front.

I wish we were able to sail this trip. Maybe next time.

Required tourist shot.

Lots of great looking apartment buildings.

This is the Verizon restaurant.

The view from where we sat.

Happy to be able to visit this beautiful place.

Wine and fresh steamed mussels! What I call a perfect match!

Nothing makes me smile more than a golden plate of calamari!

Loving it here!

Then we had some white fish with brown butter and caper sauce.

This was the highlight of our lunch! baby squid in an onion and deep vinegar sauce! It was really so delicious!

We decided to sit outside and enjoy the weather.

Verizon's interiors.

This the Verizon restaurant facade. When in Punta de Leste do eat here!

Gazebo.

Found this cool garage! Photo shoot time!

Our hotel facade.

Our "margielic" room! LOL!

Nix's South American souvenirs!

Grateful and thankful to have been able to visit this beautiful place.

We then walked it off by exploring our area and enjoyed looking at the amazing homes and fantasized what if we could have one of these in the future?!  One can dream!  In the mean time do enjoy the photos from our first day in Punta de Leste.

HUGS,

RAJO!

Rajo, sorry I had to mention it to you. Paraguay is close but Punta De Leste is in Uruguay, not Paraguay. An Argentine friend of mine owns a resort there, Casa Suaya….. Thanks! T

I think “Uruguay”, not “Paraguay” :) Thanks for your great pictures, as always!

Wow, I was here in 2003. It’s been a while. We just took a jetty from Buenos Aires to Montevideo then bus it to Playa del Punta del Este. Met gorgeous people there.
My backpacking, party and youngers days. Can’t wait to take my fiancee to SA.
