I have always heard that the New Year’s celebration in Rio is one of the most exciting and most beautiful events ever! In many ways what I heard is true! I have never seen a more spectacular exhibition of fireworks in my life! It was truly incredible! I also have never seen so many people in one place at one point in time in my life as well! Imagine having 2.5 MILLION people all in one area wearing white and watching the fireworks! It was AWESOME and inside at the same time.
We started out gathering our NEW YEAR groups together in the apartment that Rodrigo our friend from Rio who now lives in Australia. I thought that since our friends have come from all over the world to gather together that we should proudly represent our country or at least a country in this beautiful world of ours! I had pageant sashes made for everyone and although most of the gang hails from Australia I am sure that they had fun representing an exotic beautiful country none the less.
We proudly wore our sashes and played a game that we all loved! We were going to crown Ms. New Years Eve! LOL! It was certainly a lot of fun as we presented ourselves and our nations and eventually we had to crown BRAZIL as the winner! LOL!
After the contest we all had to walk…..around 10k (Actually I am not sure but it certainly felt like freaking 10K ) from Ipanema to the end of Copacobana beach where we were invited to see the fireworks at the Canadian consulate. here we would be having a premium view of the spectacular firework show! I met some really nice people at the consulate, one woman particularly enthralled me. Her name is Carolina and she is really so beautiful. I spent some time listening to her love story and her story could be turned into a movie.
Soon after we all lined ourselves along the narrow terrace and watched for close to 20 minutes one of the most incredible fireworks show I have ever experienced. You have to realise that Brazil will be hosting both the world cup and the summer Olympic games in a few years and I heard that they were already practicing as early as this year. I felt I was going to be engulfed and swallowed by the amount of fireworks I was witnessing. After all the festivities it was one slow walk back to our apartments. Keep in mind that I had a lot of alcohol already in my body at this point and a 10k walk back in slippers was not too my liking! By the time I got halfway through I was already in a bit of a daze wishing that my car and driver would appear at any second. I pushed through but ended up killing my toe’s in the end! It was the fact that I was walking home with 2.5 Million people that really made it difficult. It was as if were just a wave of humanity.
It was certainly an experience like no other! This was how I began my 2013!
HUGS,
RAJO!
